Vicks vapor rub is a known home remedy for nail fungus. It is claimed to have the ability to kill dermatophytes which is a group of fungi that causes athletes foot and toenail fungus. The active properties that provide the anti-fungal component in Vicks is thymol, eucalyptus oil and perhaps camphor to a lesser extent. The petrolatum and turpentine oil in Vicks is believed to have the ability to carry the anti-fungal ingredients to the nail bed.
While some people have had good results with Vicks to cure nail fungus, others have given up because it did not eradicate the nail fungus over the course of many months. For best results, Vicks vapor rub must be present on the nails almost around the clock. Some of the product is typically rubbed off when wearing socks and shoes. Also, the concentration of anti-fungal ingredients may not have a high enough potency of the anti-fungal ingredients to kill all of the fungus. If only some or most of the fungus is killed, then it just a matter of time that the fungus will continue to multiply and spread throughout the nails and to the nails of the other toes. While Vicks does have some of the necessary components of a successful remedy, keep in mind that it was not formulated as a nail fungus treatment.
The more effective solutions to successfully treat nail fungus would include some broad spectrum anti-fungal compounds. Broad spectrum means that it kills a wide variety of fungus which lives on the skin surface and in the nail bed. The most effective products would also have oil based compounds that will carry the anti-fungal agents through the nails and into the nail bed. FungiBan is a nail fungus treatment product that has these qualities and is very effective in treating nail fungus.
